Coins were scattered across each track in the first Super Mario Kart, and gathering them boosted your top speed over time. One important original item is making a comeback in 7, though – collectible Coins.
Some signature items seen in this game, too, have fallen away and are unlikely to re-appear in Mario Kart 7 – like the Cape Feather, which was used in this game to make your Kart leap into the air and access certain courses' shortcuts.
This first game put much more of a focus on the single-player experience and achieving the fastest times possible on tracks, while the franchise's focus has settled more on multiplayer and party gaming in the modern era.
